Project Overview
A major structural steel fabrication contractor based in Western Sydney commissioned ADFC to engineer and install a centralized source-capture welding fume extraction network across 16 intensive MIG, TIG, and submerged arc welding bays.
The Engineering Challenge
Welding heavy structural beams generates hazardous hexavalent chromium, manganese, and particulate fumes. The client required capture-at-source ergonomics that would not impede heavy overhead gantry crane operations while exhausting up to 36,000 m³/hr of contaminated air through a high-efficiency filtration matrix.

Our Engineered Solution
ADFC designed a modular centralized manifold system connected to heavy-duty self-supporting articulated arms and overhead hooding:
- 16 Articulated Dynaflex Fume Arms: 4-meter reach frictionless ball-bearing swivel joints with aerodynamic capture hoods and integrated halogen task lighting.
- Centrifugal Spark Arrestor Plenum: Heavy-gauge spark baffling box installed upstream of filtration cartridges to eliminate hot ember carryover.
- Cartridge Dust & Fume Collector: Nanofiber flame-retardant filter cartridges operating with automatic reverse-jet differential pressure pulsing.
- Sound-Attenuated Exhaust Stack: Industrial acoustic silencer housing keeping environmental noise emissions below 68 dBA at boundary lines.
Commissioning & Outcome
The installation provides seamless operator positioning and has eliminated welding smoke haze throughout the 2,400 m² workshop floor, ensuring 100% compliance with revised Safe Work Australia welding fume workplace exposure standards.
